Character Background: Some quick series specific background first. So back in the year 2010 (lol uh...) mankind discovered a new source of unlimited power and called it Magic. As all societies are prone to doing, scientists began to experiment with Magic. They also began to experiment with the theory of human evolution in what was known as the Gear Project.
In 2074 the first perfect Gear, Justice, was created. Justice decided she did not like mankind and took control of every other experimental gear and attacked the country of Japan, essentially destroying it. This did not really fly with anyone and so began a 100 year war that came to be known as the Crusades.
Just to clarify, Gears, who were created with animal DNA and machines (yes i did say this was initially for human evolution. yes the project did change at some point), essentially drove mankind into the belief that technology and machines were akin to the devil, while Magic which could be used to destroy them were godly.
So anyway. Ky was born in the year 2159. Seeing as the Crusades were still going on, at the age of 13 he joined the leading militia against the Gears, the Sacred Order of Holy Knights. His serious personality, loyalty and fighting talent quickly rose him through the ranks and he soon found himself working under the Holy Order commander Kliff Undersn. Because of his high position, he was able to meet the bounty hunter that Kliff was so adamant about joining the cause; Sol Badguy. A testimony to Sol's strength, Kliff had him placed into the combat specialist unit, high enough to keep Ky and Sol interacting on a regular basis. The two had a tentative friendship during this time, significant enough that even though the whole world was banding together to try and stop the Gears, they were very familiar with each other.
Now, in the year 2173, Ky was named leader of the Holy Order and given one of the Order's most sacred swords, the Thunderseal. While leading The Battle of Rome he was killed by an Megadeath-Class Gear.
Well, that would be an inconvenience.
Thankfully, a time-traveler named I-no and her [unknown] agenda came from the future and changed history by killing that Gear and saving Ky's life. She left, only saying that his survival would be a key factor of who won the war. Of course, he kept little to no memory of the actual dying/being saved event.
- In the timeline where Ky dies, he names Sol as the new Holy Order leader right before said death.
- In the timeline where Ky lives, Sol finds him and drags his ass back to the troops. Ky literally falls against him because "he feels safe")
At some point between now and the end of the war, Sol
In 2175, under Ky's leadership, the Order was finally able to seal Justice. Without her command, all the other Gears were unable to move. Mankind got to live peacefully again. Yes he was only 16 at this time.
Anyway, five years later and at the now legal age of 21, Ky has become captain of the International Police Force, IPF for short. Rumors begin to spread that Justice is going to be revived and so the countries form the second Holy Order and sponsor a fighting tournament to decide membership. Of course, Ky enters this tournament.
The official winner of the tournament is Sol Badguy who goes on to find that the whole tournament was actually a plan by a Gear named Testament (He was a human modified into a gear, thus able to move on his own) to sacrifice the winner's blood to awaken Justice. Sol defeats him and then defeats Justice. Using his position as the IPF captain, Ky rushes in at this moment as back-up and comes upon this scene.
Testament dead. Justice dead. Sol Badguy's signature headband smashed to pieces on the ground. Sol Badguy turning around and oh snaps, it turns out that headband had been concealing the mark on his forehead that marked him as a Gear.
Yeah, Ky feels really betrayed that the guy he fought with during the Crusades was secretly a Gear.
Unfortunately feelings have to be put aside for the moment because Sol is such a crafty bitch that he manages to escape. Ky has to return to his normal(?) life.
In 2081, back at his day job, Ky receives reports from London about both a Megadeath-Class Gear soon to awaken from being sealed and a new cure-all medicine. Going to investigate these makes Ky cross paths with the medicine's company president -- Seevus, a mysterious village of people and Sol Badguy.
In the end, it turns out that Seevus' medicine works by replacing broken or sick cells with Gear cells. Trying to make a new Command Gear (ie with the same controlling powers as Justice), Seevus manufactured one of the girls from the village into an incomplete version whose singing could awaken the Gear cells in the people and the Megadeath Gear itself.
And even though they had already clashed three times this trip, Ky and Sol joined forces to defeat Seevus. Sol spared the girl, Solaria, after deeming her innocent the whole matter and so Ky entered her into the IPF protection.
He tried to do this 'normal life' thing again.
And then received reports that another Command Gear was also running around and doing its own thing. Oh.
So Ky goes to investigate this too! Of course the
Being the MAIN CHARACTER, Sol of course gets to the Gear first. The Gear, known as Dizzy, is again an innocent girl who is spared being smote. Sol again leaves this girl in Ky's care. Instead of sending her to the IPF, he leaves her in the care of some airship pirates. No, I'm not sure why. But they're good people so he does.
Ky goes back to a normal li--oh no wait. He duels with Sol Badguy and is literally punched into Wonderland.
Overall, Ky is a devout believer in God, chivalry and justice. He's very strict in his beliefs, though is capable of seeing in more than just black and white. He's naive, trusting and can be misled, but he's also not blind. He is aware that the IPF is
He is constantly trying to help those in need and do the right thing and can easily let himself become overworked.
Though he led the Holy Order to victory, he doesn't appear to receive or take any credit for it, and more often than not has to try and convince others that the IPF is installed for the good of the people.
Ky doesn't actually hate Sol, but he sees him as his greatest rival, and most if not all of their hate is superficial as revealed in the drama CDs... though they were much definitely on better terms before the whole Gear thing was a factor.
The Postwar Agency Bureau, keeping an eye on all the most powerful fighters in the world, classifies Ky as as threat Rank B, because even though he's extremely powerful, his love for the law can keep him under government control.
Abilites/Special Powers: Ky's swordsmanship is well above average, being able to stay on par with a Gear as powerful as Sol.
He uses lightning based Magic which is amplified in his sword, Thunderseal. Lightning is said to be the hardest magics to utilize, and his ability to control it is what really rose him through the ranks of the Order. Since the tender age of 16, Ky has since mastered use of his magic, able to do all sorts of things like throw it and leave it as a trap for opponents. Overall, this makes Ky more resistant to electricity than most people. He also probably smells like ozone a lot. Just saying.
And seeing as he's French, Ky is fluent in French. I'm putting this here simply so I can also say that he's already fluent in and aware of that amazing universal language that we all know exists in fandom world.
Third-Person Sample: Ky is too distracted today and he knows it. Everything and anything else is on his mind and he's paying for it with every passing second. Sol talks-a-lot Badguy isn't make the situation any better either, and the blonde can tell that He knows it.
He grips the hilt of his sword tighter and feels the pale arcs of electricity ripple and crack over his knuckles. His agitation is coming out in his magic which is such a rookie mistake, but when Sol is making some smart remark -- saying that the boy looks like a cat fluffed up, it's all that static he thinks -- Ky can't help but want to prove him wrong no matter the cost.
He lunges at Sol and holds his breath as their weapons clash, because the scent of ozone and smoke is a really awful combination on the lungs. He can, should, care later though. Sol puts his shoulder into the next attack, enough to make Ky stumble back and catch an eruption of fire.
He knows he should be more careful, because his fingertips are now scorched and it's going to be odd to hold a pen for the next few days. But that shouldn't matter. Yet the fight is becoming a background noise to him at this point.
Though why shouldn't it? Ky and Sol don't talk, never talk, not anymore anyway. The blonde doesn't think he could bring himself to. There are too many things to ask, and on top of all it all just why. So this is what he settles with as a substitution.
Why did you leave?
Why have I now let three Gears live?
Why, Sol, I'm asking you because God can't answer my questions.
The conversation in his mind is cut short when he meets eyes with the other man--when did they get so close?-- and Sol mutters something filled with gratuitous swearing that Ky tunes out.
He's never defeated Sol before, not in a fight that's actually mattered. But he really wants to.
Wants to and will are very different things, his mind tells him. He's aware. If he defeats Sol will he have the answers Ky is looking for? No, the only answers are here and now.
In a practiced move that killed so many Gears during the war, he swings his sword skyward, the follow up of lightning is verging on dangerous voltage. But Sol isn't just any Gear, as Ky has deduced, and he would know better, has seen this attack before, and what kind of paperwork is there to file away once he gets back to headquarters?
No, that isn't right.
He hopes Sol thinks his impending frown is from the other's will timed block and not from his inability to be the rival he really should be right now.
First-Person Sample: [The camera flicks on, focused on a man who looks like he's seen better days. He's face down, but slowly looks up, dazed and with blood running down his forehead. He reaches out for the camera, seemingly recognizing it, and the feed cuts out the second he picks it up.]
[...]
[The feed resumes, but judging how Ky is looking down at it purposefully, it seems he'd meant to turn it on this time. He's since cleaned himself up, or at least wiped the blood out of his eyes.]
Hello? This is captain Ky Kiske, officer ID numbers four-one-two-six-nine. I require--...[He hesitates, just for a second, and then shakes his head.] This seems to be anything but the Parisian streets, am I correct in thinking that? If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be most appreciated.
[He takes a deep breath before continuing. He can feel the headache coming on just thinking about it.] And if anyone has see the loud boor singing Queen in the past twenty minutes, could you please notify me? Thank you.
Kiske out. [Ky turns the device off and leans against the fountain. This garden is nice, and he hurts a little too much to move just yet.]
